Venture Quest Update

Venture Quest Weekend is coming the last weekend in April. The cost is $40.00 per person. We will need this from you by the first meeting in April (on the 2nd). We need to register on time. Judy has a list of people that signed up in January. If any adults want to take the Venture training, please let Judy know. It is offered that Saturday of the event at the camp.

Also, please save your Ukrop's Golden Gift certificates for our crew. We are participating again this year!

Thursday Night Meeting

This Thursday, February 5th is our regularly scheduled meeting at 7:30. One of the vice presidents will be leading the meeting unless Sean can be there. Judy would like to remind you that we wear class A uniforms to our meetings unless otherwise decided. We will hopefully have a new venturer joining us for the meeting. Please invite a friend to come that may be interested in caving. David is in charge of the FOS dinner at our next meeting, so he may want to plan that.

The program will be led by Carole Noble-Park and Michele Park concerning caving. The cost for the caving trip is $45.00 because we will be spending the night at Natural Bridge. Food is not included, so you need to bring around $20.00 because you will be responsible for paying for your own meals for Saturday night supper, Sunday breakfast, and lunch. Carole will be explaining exactly what you need to bring for caving. On Sunday, we may be able to visit the Natural Bridge and Foamhenge.

Please bring your $10.00 deposit for the caving on Thursday. In March, we will be taking the NRA certification for pistols. The trip to Cavalier will finish up this certification.

In April, is the venture quest weekend at T. Brady Saunders camp.

In May, we have the scuba certification weekend at the Lake.

In June, batteau?

In July, Key Largo trip. etc.

Scuba Update

This Saturday the 31st of January there is another Discover Scuba offering from 1-2:30 at the Hopewell Community Center. The cost is $35.00 and is given by the Dive Center. If you are interested in going please let Judy know ASAP so that she can give them a head count.

Those that would like to go this Saturday to the Hopewell Community Center, can arrive at 10:30 am and stay until 1:30. So you can have a longer lesson for the same price.

Also, Judy asked if they could set something up at the Chickahominy YMCA again and she said she would call tomorrow and see if we could set up a 1:00 to 5:00 session there so it would be closer for us. Judy will let us know if she gets a day.

The weekend that we will be completing our scuba certification is May 23-24th at Lake Rawlings. We will be camping and anyone who would like to come is welcome.This will be the Dive Training Camp-out. Put this on the calendar if you are interested in receiving full certification.

Intro to Scuba Class

We finally found a POOL!!!!! The Intro to Scuba Class will be next Sunday the 21st from 1-5 at the Chickahominy YMCA. Judy will be glad to give directions on Friday night.

Please let Judy know who is coming to this. Remember anyone can take the class. It costs $35.00. Judy needs to know the count. If you need a ride, let Judy know. If this date does not work for you and you still want the scuba certification, we can hold another class later on.

More On Snowshoe

The following is from an e-mail Judy sent out...

I wanted to update you on the trip for this coming weekend, Aug. 15-17th. We will be staying at Margaret and Ellie Grove's place at Snow Shoe.

She said that cell phones do not work well there. Snow Shoe has a lake with boats and a pool. We can use all the amenities on Saturday for about $14.00 per person. She said it is well worth the price. We can kayak, canoe, paddleboat, and fish on the lake for that price. The lake is open from 10-6. The pool is open from 12-8. We will have a bike rack for taking a bike, if you are interested.

The cost for the trip is $100.00 if you are going white water rafting. If you are not, the cost is $35.00 per person for food and gas. You will probably need some extra bucks for the lake on Saturday and for eating out at least once. I would suggest at least twenty-five dollars just to be safe.

The White Water Rafting will be on Sunday at noon. We will get up early Sunday and have to be there before 11:30 ready to go. We are using Songer Whitewater. The web site is www.songer2008.com. You will probably need to download the waiver form and bring it with you on Friday.

Margaret, Ellie, and I will be buying the food to take. If you have some special drink or food(I have heard goldfish are not allowed) that you must have, please consider bringing it with you, or letting us know so we can buy it Thursday. If anyone wants to go shopping with us, (we are going on Thursday afternoon at Walmart), let us know. You could meet us there.

We still have two spots left on the raft if you know anyone else who would like to go....Right now we have five youth, and three adults going on the trip. Six are white water rafting. The raft will hold eight! Invite a friend! (Call Jeff-For David or Andrew)

Remember to bring sleeping bags, bathing suit, and towels... We will be staying inside at night. No tents needed. The lady at Songer said to remind you to wear water shoes or tennis shoes and polyester clothes, not cotton, for warmth in the water.

If you have any specific questions, you can direct them to Margaret Grove, Ellie's mom. She knows the area and will be able to answer them.

Patrick's Eagle Project

On Friday, August 1st, I will need at least 4 guys to help dig holes, just keep in mind that many hands make light work, any leader that wants to come is more than welcome. I want to meet at Messiah Lutheran Church (8154 Atlee Road Mechanicsville, VA 23111) around 9 am, I'm predicting we'll be done by 10:30-11:00, depending on the soil. If anyone has a post hole digger, you are encouraged to bring that as well.

Then, that Sunday, August 3rd, I want to meet at the church (Messiah Lutheran) around 1 pm. We'll be building benches and setting the posts. If anyone has a drill, they are encouraged to bring it. I'm anticipating we'll be done by 3 or so. And as I've said before, many hands make light work. Also, if you have safety glasses you are encouraged to bring those as well, I will have a limited supply.

Snowshoe Adventure

Where: Snowshoe, West Virginia

Return on Monday around suppertime.

White Water Trip

The date for the whitewater trip has been changed to August 15-18. Ms. Grove had a scheduling conflict so the date had to be moved. If the date doesn't work for you, bring it up at the next meeting. As always, our dates are not set in stone.

We have found out more information about the week-long camp at Brady Saunders this summer. The camp will not be open the week that we talked about going during the officers meeting. At this point there are only two full weeks available:

June 29 - July 5
OR
July 20 - 26

You can go for part of any week at $40 a day if you just want to go for the scuba classes.

Send me an e-mail if you're interested in either one of the open weeks or if you want to just go for a couple days as a Crew.

Spring Camporee

The Venture Crew has been invited to the Spring Camporee the weekend after this one. Mr. Ward would like us to help out at one of the stations, he was thinking Wilderness Survival. It would only be 20 minutes per station.

Here's the info from the latest troop update...

"The next Camping Trip is the Spring Camporee – April 18-19-20. We need firm commitments and menu planning next meeting. The theme is Trail Days and the Camporee will take place at Sherando. This should be a great trip – please attend!! There will be a hike, a parade, campfire, and we're told that the lake is freshly stocked. (Scouts 16 and over need fishing licenses with trout stamps.)"

Battlefield District Klondike Derby

What: We will be leading the winter/nature trivia station, plus anywhere else we are needed

binoculars
money for lunch or a bag lunch
a dessert to share for supper - we will be eating with the troop for the supper

Cost: $10.00 due as soon as possible

Please dress warmly: Gloves, hats, coats, layers, wool socks, boots, etc.

Make sure you'll be good to go if it's in the 70's as well. You never know these days.

Klondike Derby Stations

Here are the stations that'll be at the Klondike. Think about what you want to do so we can decide at the next meeting.

OUR STATIONS ARE BY ORDER OF THE JOURNEY.

Station #1. Scouting and Klondike Derby history: Crew 521, assorted scout memorabilia, and campsite.

Station #2. Winter Survival: We need a Leader and at least two or more scouts to teach and run this station.

Station #3. Winter Rescue: Mr. David DeJean, Ice rescue, and team work.

Station #4. Knot Challenges: Mr. Bonelli, and at least two or more scouts to teach and work the station.

Station #5. Fire Building Challenge: Mr. Matt Blade, and Mr. Dan Jenkins, will teach and facilitate the Fire Building Station.

Station #6. Winter, Nature Trivia: We need a leader and two scouts for this station.

Station #7. Snow Blindness, tent set-up, (Team Work): We need leadership at this station.

Station #8. First aid: Mr. Richard Benson, with at least two Scouts and or Crew will work this station.

Station #9. Build a stretcher and race against the clock: Leader and Scouts or Crew needed to facilitate this Station.

Station #10. Klondike Casino, games of chance: Patrick and Jeff Sutton and Troop 534 will challenge the incoming patrols on the last leg of their Klondike Derby. Rocks paper scissors, 3 card monty, heads or tails, guess a number from 1 to 5. to name few. Wagering with their newly earned nuggets. As in all Casinos, Free hot chocolate will be available to all patrons.

The crew has been invited to go on a hike with the troop. Here are the details from the recent weekly update:

"Dec 1st hike on the Va Capital Trail. All day, bring your own lunch, good to invite potential recruits – (scouts and Webelos perhaps?), and our friends in the Ventures. This event will count toward the hiking merit badge (if you have gotten a blue card). Some details still to be worked out, but we will probably leave about 8am from the church, and return around 6pm. (Tentative times – may change.)"

Caving Trip

If you are a going, make sure you bring a copy of your Class III medical form. If you need a blank, it's on both the Crew Website and Troop Website.

You'll need to sign a permission form as well. That is now on the Crewsite as well.

Different Location

As you can see in the top-right corner there, our next meeting is November 1st. But...

New Hanover will be hosting CARITAS from Oct. 27 through Nov. 3. They will be housed in the Carson Building through the week. Venture Crew will need to meet in Hanover Hall on November 1.

That was sent out in an e-mail earlier by New Hanover's Ministry Administrator.

A Site of Our Own

Using Google Page Creator I have created a full website for the Venture Crew. As you can see to the right, the link is already up, so check it out! The photo section is basically the picassa photosite i set up last week.

So once you've seen it please post comments here (you don't have to register anymore) and let me know what you think. Is the design good, what info do you wanna see on there, etc. It's the crew's site.

Crew Group Photo

I've now added a photo of what used to be the entire crew (at the bottom). We've gotten a good many new members since then though, August being a sort of explosion month. I think the registered number of crew members doubled, or near-to.

What would be nice is if I could get a full body shot of everyone in the crew. Then I could use photoshop to make a collage of all the crew members, somewhat similar to what we have now.

The full body shots need to be of single crew members. Because as we get more new crew members, I may need to move people around to get everyone to fit right.

So think about it and tell me what you think...

-Woods and Water is coming up October 6-7 Judy is going up early Friday, call or e-mail Megan if you need a ride. We will be leaving after school on Friday. Also if anyone needs a ride home early, Megan will be coming back Saturday after the campfire.

-Encampment is the following weekend, October 12-14, Judy and Beth need to know ASAP if you are going. PLEASE contact one of them right away to let them know.

-Popcorn: Beth has packets for selling popcorn. Please contact her and help us earn some money for our crew activities. Sales begin Sept. 29th.

-MEETING DATE CHANGE: Our next meeting will be after Woods & Water, on October 11th

Scuba at the Encampment

FYI…
The Venture Scouts of troop 184 will have a Discover Scuba Demonstration at the Encampment. Boy Scouts 12 and older and Venturers will be able to participate but they need to bring a bathing suit and towel.
